Efficient Household Composting: Turn Organic Waste into Nutrient-Rich Soil

Waste management is a challenge for the entire globe. There are different waste management methods followed by different regions of the world. When considering solid waste, organic waste plays an important role. Organic waste is waste that comes from plant or animal sources and is biodegradable. Managing organic waste can be done through composting, which will provide us with a fertilizer to be used for plants at the end.

Composting is the process of decomposing organic matter to create nutrient-rich soil. The decomposing is done by microorganisms. The environmental conditions including temperature and relative humidity are important factors and those should be within the optimum level. It is an effective way to reduce waste and create a sustainable environment. Composting is a simple process that can be done at home, and it is an excellent way to make use of organic waste. In this essay, we will discuss how to make household compost using organic waste.

To make household compost, a few items are needed. First, a compost bin or container is necessary. And also the bin should be large enough to hold your organic waste, and it should have holes or vents to allow air circulation. Second, a carbon source is needed. Shredded newspaper, dry leaves, or sawdust can be used here. The third one is a nitrogen source. Vegetable scraps, fruit scraps, or coffee grounds are frequently used as nitrogen sources. Finally, you will need water.

With the above-mentioned ingredients, we can start making compost. Let's begin the process by adding a layer of carbon to the bottom of your compost bin. This carbon layer will help to absorb any excess moisture. Then it will prevent the compost from becoming too wet. Next, a layer of nitrogen source is added on top of the carbon. We need to maintain the ratio of carbon to nitrogen at roughly 3:1. So if you add one cup of used carbon source, you should add three cups of your nitrogen source.

Then the process is continued while adding layers of carbon and nitrogen until the compost bin is full. After, the compost bin should be watered to maintain enough moisture for biodegradation.  But it is necessary not to add too much water. The compost should be damp, but not soggy. If too much water is added, more carbon sources should be added to absorb the excess moisture.

Once the compost bin is full, it should be covered with a lid or a tarp to keep it moist and warm. Then the compost should be turned in every few days to help it decompose evenly. This can be done by using a pitchfork or a shovel to mix the compost.

Then the decomposition of the organic matter will be initiated after a few weeks. Then the substances will turn dark, and crumbly. At the end of the process, the compost is produced. It can be either used in gardening or sell compost as a micro-scale business.

Now it is clear that making household compost using organic waste is an easy and effective way to reduce organic waste that is being collected within our household.  There is a potential for us to gain an income through nutritious planting and selling produced compost. Further, it is required to consider relevant amounts of nutrients when we sell compost. We better provide the best product to our customers.

Another amazing fact is that, if we produce our own compost at the household level, we will be able to have our own garden with planted vegetables and fruits in nutrient-rich soil. In the end, we will have our own harvest. It will be safe to use these for our consumption since we don't use chemically synthesized fertilizer. In the long run, it will create a more sustainable and healthy environment. Then our next generation will well survive on our planet.

So let's make compost by using organic waste to manage the organic waste that is being generated. Though we initiate this at the household level, let's join hands as individuals who really need to protect and ensure the well-being of mother nature.
